I did also wonder if perhaps there would be a lesbian love story between them. I certainly thought there would be a confrontation between her and the heroine, Nella, at some point. The blurb conjured the idea of the miniaturist as some kind of witch and I thought that perhaps the book would be about how she was uncovered. Secrets were teased and it seemed that the miniaturist was someone very powerful, someone who could alter the lives of the main characters.Īfter reading the blurb I imagined the story would have some element of the supernatural. The blurb promised intrigue, informing me that a young bride finds her life being mirrored by the creations of a miniaturist.

Besides knowing it was a historical novel I didn’t really know much else about it. To be honest, I am not entirely sure what I expected from The Miniaturist. With so much hype surrounding it, I was keen to get my hands on a copy and find out what all the fuss was about.

Last year it was voted Specsavers Book of the Year and Waterstone’s Book of the Year. A debut novel, it has been making waves in the publishing world for some time now, garnering rave reviews and nominations for book prizes. I’m sure most of you will have heard of The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton by now.
